All Grove players, except Judd and Neil, entered the event. It was Anda who had the best run: he reached the QF, where he lost to Ding Junhui. Ding went on to win the event. Anda had beaten Wenbo in the previous round.

This match was a bit strange. Neil played very well and dominated but hadn’t much of the run of the balls, in particular in his attempts to develop the pack. His young opponent played extremely well in spells – his potting was ferocious at times – but he also missed some relatively easy balls at crucial times. Pressure and lack of experience showing probably. Just as well for Neil, because had Lyu been able to take his chances, Neil could have been in trouble.

Judd played well and scored heavily but, to be fair, his opponent struggled badly. When he got chances he didn’t take any, and his safety was all over the place. This wasn’t a match, it was an onslaught and it’s a bit of a shame for the fans who came to watch it. Especially for those who have watched Eden before. He can play, much better than this. But Judd will be happy, he’s got an early night!

Neil and Judd were the only Grove players still in it as the tournament reached the last 16 and the two tables setup. Unfortunately that was the end of the road for Neil who lost 6-5 to Graeme Dott. Judd made it to the final but lost 10-9 to Ronnie O’Sullivan … again.

This was a thrilling match. Judd showed a lot of character, coming back from 9-4 down to force a decider. Ronnie was shaken but held his nerves and laid a nasty snooker behind the green that forced a mistake by Judd. Ronnie made a 51 from there to take the match and the title. Judd was very gracious in defeat. He’s playing very well and has time on his side.

The first day saw Neil and Wenbo qualify for the final day, where, unfortunately, they met each other in the last 16. Judd joined them on day 2 and faced Marco Fu. Neil reached the QF, Judd lost in the SF.

The Haining Open is the second Asian Tour event, played from 20 to 24 October 2014.
All Chinese Grove players are competing. On day 1, Cao Xin Long, Li Hang and Lyu Chenwei won their R1 matches but Zhang Anda was beaten. Day 2 didn’t start well with Wenbo and Yu Delu losing in R1, but Cao Yupeng progressed. Only Li Hang and Cao Yupeng managed to reach Round 3 but that’s as far as they went.

Here is what he had to say to Worldsnooker.

Cao top scored with 54 as he set up a match with Ryan Day. “Neither of us played well and I haven’t been practising much recently,” said Cao. “I knew I wasn’t able to score heavily against Ricky so I tried to play a better tactical game. The opening frame was vital. I got in first, then he could have cleared up but he left the last red over the pocket. Once I was 3-0 up I didn’t leave him any chances and my safety worked. I think I’ve found some form for my next match against Ryan Day.

“I didn’t qualify for Chengdu so the Haining Open is the one I’m focussing on. It’s a pity that I can’t play in Chengdu. I was ranked 41 a couple of months ago but now I’m 51. Every tournament is important as the rankings can change significantly – there’s a chance I could drop out of the top 64 by the end of the season.

“I’m not bothered who I play, I will have a chance to win because it’s the nature of the game. It’s more about playing yourself, not your opponent. If you play to your best you can beat anyone, that’s my theory. “
