This was Judd’s sixth ranking title this season, a new record. By winning this event, Judd also won the European Series, and the £150000 bonus that comes with it, snatching it from Neil Robertson!

The tournament was played behind closed doors over the week-end as a precautionary measure in the context of the corona virus outbreak.

This are the relevant excerpts of the WST report on the final:

Judd Trump became the first player to win six ranking titles in the same season by beating Kyren Wilson 4-3 in the final of the BetVictor Gibraltar Open.

Stephen Hendry, Ding Junhui, Mark Selby and Ronnie O’Sullivan have all won five ranking events in a season, but Trump becomes the first to land six in a single campaign, having already lifted the trophy at the International Championship, World Open, Northern Ireland Open, German Masters and Players Championship.

Trump came into this weekend needing to win the title in Gibraltar to pip Neil Robertson to the £150,000 bonus available for the player earning the most money across the four events of the BetVictor European Series – and he did just that.

On a momentous night for snooker’s dominant player, Trump also collected the £50,000 first prize and the £5,000 high break bonus. When the £20,000 he is guaranteed at next week’s Tour Championship is added on, his prize money for the season will go past the £1 million mark. If he goes on to win next week’s event and the World Championship, he could take that total past £1.7 million.

The World Champion and runaway world number one now has 17 ranking titles to his name, bringing him level with Selby in seventh place on the all-time list. He has won his last nine ranking finals in a golden spell covering the past 16 months, and it seems likely that in the coming seasons the massively talented 30-year-old will go on to challenge the record of 36 ranking crowns held jointly by Hendry and O’Sullivan.

By making nine centuries over the weekend, the Bristolian accelerated his march towards yet another record as he has now compiled 97 tons this season, within range of Robertson’s record of 103 in a single campaign, set in 2013/14.

….

“I missed the chance to go 3-1 up, then Kyren came back and led 3-2 so I had to recompose myself and go again,” said Trump after winning the Gibraltar event for the first time. “I made a good break to go 3-3 and that settled me down. I’m pleased with the way I handled myself under pressure.

“To win six ranking titles in a season, something which no one else has ever done, is an amazing achievement for me. It’s nice to beat these records when I have the chance, and to keep my run going of wins in ranking finals.

“I knew what I had to do when I came here, to win the £150,000 bonus, and I decided to come here and give it my all. I wasn’t thinking about that tonight until it got to 3-3. It was a lot of money at stake and that added a bit of pressure. But Kyren was also playing for his place at the Tour Championship so there was a lot at stake for both of us.”

All detailed results are available on snooker.org

Judd was the only Grove player to make it to the finals day.

Neil Robertson withdrew out of precaution, suffering from mild flu symptoms, whist Ali Carter was advised not to travel. Ding didn’t enter the event.

All Grove players were involved. Neil Robertson was the defending champion. Neil came to compete in Cardiff right after winning the World Grand Prix. He had just made three finals in the last three weeks, in three different countries, winning two. At the start of the tournament Neil admitted that, had he not been the defending champion, he would have withdrawn. He did extremely well to reach the quarter finals, but, at that stage, he hit the wall and lost by 5-0 to Kyren Wilson. Judd Trump was beaten at the same stage by the eventual winner Shaun Murphy.
Although disappointed, Jack vwas able to take the positives from this excellent run. After the match he said:

“It is gutting to lose the final. You have to take the positives and this is a big step forward for me. I have built some momentum and I played some of the best snooker that I think I can play. That is a positive and my concentration is getting better.

“You have to think about it rationally or you can get depressed. I have qualifiers all next week. There are so many tournaments now that it is a numbers game and consistency rather than blowing hot and cold.

“It was amazing. The people were cheering me on and I don’t know if many people would have heard of me before today. I go for my shots and I think they appreciate that”

They certainly do

On his way to the final Jack beat Mark Allen and John Higgins, as well as Thepchaiya Un-Nooh who had sent Neil Robetson home at the last 16 stage. Judd Trump was beaten by David Gilbert in the QF.

Otherwise it was a bit of a strange tournament for the Grove players.
Judd Trump was bidding to win his 8th title of the year, and be the first player since Stephen Hendry to hold all the triple crown titles in a calendar year. But it wasn’t to be as Judd was beaten in the last 32 round by Nigel Bond. The 54 years old veteran had a miracle tournament … he reached the last 16, where he was only narrowly beaten by Gary Wilson. Nigel was also responsible for the demise of Luca Brecel in the first round.
Liang Wenbo showed tremendous courage: his mother passed away at the start of the tournament – she was only 56 – and Liang rushed back to China for the funerals. He took the decision to come back to continue to play in the tournament and reached the QF, the best of the Grove players in York. He only lost to the eventual Champion Ding Junhui. Hats off Liang! Ding had also beaten Ali Carter in the last 32 round.
Neil Robertson lost by 6-1 in the last 16, to young Yan Bingtao, who also sent Jack Lisowski home in the previous round. Oliver Lines fell at first hurdle, losing to Michael Georgiou.

By winning this title, Judd accomplished something that hadn’t be done since Stephen Hendry in 1990/91, winning three ranking events as a first time World Champion, and, of course, there could be more to come. This victory further consolidates Judd’s status as the current dominant figure in snooker: he’s World Champion, World number one and miles ahead of everyone else on the one year list.

After the match Judd said: “It was an amazing atmosphere out there at the end. Both times I have played him here in the final it has been unbelievable. The arena is made for snooker. I managed to save my best for the final. I wasn’t feeling particularly great in the matches leading up to that. The end of that semi-final against John Higgins inspired me and that gave me the confidence to go out there against Ronnie and play my best.

“I think for the fans we do bring the best out of each other. We have had some amazing games recently. It is always pretty close. When I have played him recently, I have played my best. That is what you have to do against him. If you miss chances he walks all over you.

“I can’t wait to get started at the UK Championship now. I am full of confidence after the last few events. It is one I’ve had my eye on since winning the World Championship. I’d love to be able to win all three in a row.” (source Worldsnooker)

The tournament was played in Belfast from 11th to 17th of November 2019. Neil Robertson, who had just won the 2019 Champion of Champions suffered a bit of a hang-over and lost in the first round. From the other Grove players, Luca Brecel was the most successful; he reached the last 16.

The 2019 English Open was played in the K2, in Crawley from 14 to 20 October 2019.
The tournament was won by Mark Selby who beat David Gilbert by 9-1 in the Final.
It wasn’t a good tournament for the Grove players: only three of them reached the last 32: Neil Robertson, Jack Lisowski and Judd Trump and that’s as far as they got. Ali Carter, Oliver Lines, Luca Brecel and Liang Wenbo lost right away in the first round.

Neil Robertson made the headlines for … driving to the “wrong” Barnsley: the one in Gloucester rather the one in Yorkshire. As a result he had to forfeit his match. It was the story of the week really, and quite extraordinary indeed considering he’s played in the “right” Barnsley countless times before. But then, a friend was driving him, this time he was behind the wheel and did set his satnav up wrong.

All other Grove players qualified, except Oliver Lines. Jack Lisowski made a 145 in the last frame of his match against Tian Pengfei. It’s already a goog candidate for the tournament high break.

The China Championship 2019 Qualifiers were played from 15th to 18th of August 2019, at the Barnsley Metrodome. All the Grove players were involved, except for Judd who, being the reigning World Champion, has his first round match held-over. It was a mixed bag for the Grove as Neil, Jack and Luca qualified easily, but Ali, Oliver and Liang Wenbo were beaten.
