China Championship 2018
The Evergrande China Championship 2018 was held in Guangzhou, from 24 to 30 September 2018. It was won by Mark Selby who beat John Higgins by 10-9 in the Final.
Luca Brecel was the defending champion but got no further than the last 64, where he lost by 5-3 to Martin O’Donnell. Ali Carter lost at the same stage, losing to Fergal O’Brien by 5-1 but remarkably made a 144 in that single frame he won and this ended up being the Highest break of the tournament.
Neil Robertson and Jack Lisowski went out in the last 32, losing to Graeme Dott and Scott Donaldson respectively.
Martin O’Donnell who had knocked Luca out, was also responsible for Liang Wenbo’s exit in the last 16, by the score of 5-3 again.
Judd Trump reached the quarter finals, but lost, by 5-3, at that stage to John Higgins, the eventual runner-up.
Luca Brecel would have reasons to feel aggrieved though: he was the defending champion, and the first player from mainland Europe to have won a ranking event. Yet his opening match was scheduled at what was 3:30 am in Europe and not shown live on television. His next match was then played on a side table…
