2021 Northern Ireland Open

22 October 2021 No Comment

The tournament was played at the Waterfront in Belfast from 9-17 October 2021. Mark Aleen beat John Higgins by 9-8 in the final to become the 2021 Northern Ireland Champion.

The big talking points ahead of the tournament were:

  • will Judd Trump be able to win this event for the fourth consecutive year?
  • will he face Ronnie O’Sullivan again in the final?
  • and will he beat him by the same 9-7 score ?
  • Actually, none of this happened…

Judd Trump was the most successful Grove player in the event, but he lost in the QFs, beaten by the eventual Champion Mark Allen.
Jack Lisowski, Luca Brecel, and Neil Robertson – who was playing for the first time since the World Championship – all lost in round 2.
Ali Carter lost in round 1.

Despite the QF defeat, Judd Trump regained his World number one status at the end of the event.

There had been one qualifying round, played in August in Leicester. Michael Holt had narrowly been beaten at that stage by Chris Wakelin.
