World Open 2016

2 August 2016 No Comment

Yushan, China – 25-31 July, 2016. It proved to be a bit of a strange tournament with a lot of top players going out as early as the last 64 or 32, one of them being Judd who was outplayed by former Grove player Zhang Anda. Neil was the only Grove player who had a deep run in the tournament: he reached the semi finals where he lost by 5-2 to an exceptionally brilliant Joe Perry.
The tournament was won by Ali Carter, his first ranking win since he beat cancer and one that brings him back in the top 16. Well done Ali.

James Cahill had his last 128 match held to the venue as he was facing former Grove Liang Wenbo. Unfortunately he couldn’t beat him.
Yu Delu suffered illness and had to withdraw from the tournament before actually playing, he was supposed to do battle with Judd. Hence Judd got a bye to the last 32, where he lost to Zhang Anda.
Oliver Lines faced the tough task of getting the better of John Higgins in the last 64, whilst Cao Yupeng got Shaun Murphy. Neither were able to progress.
Neil reached the semi finals, beating Ian Burns, Thor Chuan Leong, Ryan Day and David Gilbert before falling to an excellent Joe Perry. Neil scored heavily throughout but maybe wasn’t always as clinical in the safety department as he would have needed to go the distance.

The tournament was won by Ali Carter, his first ranking win since he beat cancer and one that brings him back in the top 16. Well done Ali.
